Sculpture: two highly reflective metal arcs several metres high. There are two identical human figures looking upward; one is situated at the top of one of the arcs, the other at the bottom.

Waves (2010)

Steinunn Þórarinsdóttir (born 1955, Reykjavík)

Steinunn lives and works in Iceland, having studied in Portsmouth and Bologna, with works in collections across Europe, Japan, USA and Australia. Her figures, like those here, have a deliberate lack of definition so have an anonymous quality. The height of the columns means that they reflect the sky. The figures, one high up in the air and the other firmly standing on the ground, also give the feeling of movement from one place to another. She said,

“The sculpture ‘Waves’ is inspired by the special character of Aberdeen with its open seas and unique colour as well as the shape of the Aberdeen Sports Village building. The work expresses dynamic movement, progress and a journey of discovery.”
