Science and Art (2003)
Toby Paterson (born 1974, Glasgow)
Based in Glasgow, Paterson studied at Glasgow School of Art, winning the Beck’s Futures Prize in 2002. He is inspired by cities and modernist architecture, influenced by both his physical experience of a place as a skateboarder and by his interest in its history.
‘Science and Art’, commissioned for the Fraser Noble Building, employs a variety of images to imply the potential of creativity across a variety of fields. It suggests a broad optimism with regard to scientific and cultural activity, particularly through the use of an image of a proposed museum for art and science and elements from a modernist climbing wall to hint at the possibilities of cross-disciplinary creativity.
