Summer Holidays
Many of our cohort members have been lucky to have had holidays in Europe and further afield – a far cry from their happy holiday experiences in the 1950s! For the majority back then, holidays rarely extended beyond Aberdeenshire. Many could not afford a holiday. Day trips and picnics to the seaside or country were enjoyed, as was staying with relatives or friends. Camping was common – setting off with all the camping equipment on a roof rack or trailer - often to be plagued by the dreaded midges! Primary and secondary school trips, and guide camps, were often the first holidays without family. Then there were Butlins and Pontins, an annual joy for many.
By the 1970s package holidays had arrived, and soon, long haul flights were also becoming more affordable. From day trips and picnics, camping and caravanning, school trips, Butlins, package holidays abroad, and long-haul flights - read about summer holiday experiences in our cohort members’ essays.
