VASE XVIII. Kylix, marked outside HIITAPXO * KAAO*, inside EIIOE *EN, but name of artist is wanting. All other Vases with love-name Hipparchos come from Euphronios (see Arch. Zeitung, 1878-79). * Hand written zig zig (like bolt of lightning) The presence of H as the spiritus asper, the archaic form of II and the three-lined figure of sigma in its three occurrences, deserve to be noted by the philological student. Inside. Satyr with high ears and a stag. Outside.(I) Ajax and Achilles playing at dice on altar of Athene: one of their shields has gorgon's head. On each side a bowman and a hoplite turned away in the act of fighting with unseen foe. Athene behind with aegis. The heroes have Boeotian, the hoplites Argolic shields. (2) A revelling scene, five youths, an old man, and a servant with oinochoe. In centre is a curious stand, on one ear of which hangs oinochoe.
