Abstract

Elethias is mentioned in the first book of Diodonus as having been built in honour of that goddess which is the Lucina of the Greeks, and who presided over childbirth - Boubastis was invoked at this place to propitiate delivery and relieve the pains of labour. The symbol of the goddess was a cat; and a little antique bronze in my possession was doubtless one of the penates or household divinities of the place.' Quotation from the journals of Dr Robert Wilson (1787-1871)
