Description

Carved schist head of the Buddha The halo, which came to be an inevitable tribute for all Buddhist divinities, probably derives from the ancient Iranian convention of symbolising the celestial light of Ahura Mazda with a disc or sun. From this source, the halo found its way into early Christian and Buddhist art as a means of signifying the divine radiance emanating from the person of Christ or the Buddha.
