Solar pyrheliometer. A large instrument made of steel, brass and wood. Three small fan shaped steel plates which can be rotated are positioned over a long brass cylinder which extends from a squat wooden cylinder, suspended in a ring mount allowing the apparatus to be rotated in multiple directions.

Silver disk pyreheliometer for measuring the power in solar radiation. Instrument purchased from Smithsonian Institution who developed the device. Can be seen in use in the photograph of the total solar eclipse of 1927 taken on top of the Cromwell…

soldering circuit

Open circuitry for probably a soldering pen. 3 controls on control panel: pen heat (scale 0 to 9), pen zero and an on switch and an off switch.

sonometer

2 string (wire) sonometer with screw tension. Dovetailed box with 4 sets of ornate slots between bridges. Later addition of small brass pulley on one end and brass hook on other to take wire with weights. Probably purchased by Prof Thomson.

South Breakwater, Aberdeen around 1920. A concrete breakwater with a tower at the end projects from a rocky shore. Two figures stand on the breakwater in the distance. A small steamboat and a sailboat head past the breakwater, and the Aberdeenshire coast is visible on the horizon.
