Description

Chilkat blanket woven from mountain-goat wool and yellow-cedar bark Tsimshian style, British Columbia The yarns were died black, yellow and green by boiling in solutions of urine, hemlock, copper and certain species of lichen, and were woven into complex designs with the aid of a painted pattern board. The blankets were worn by persons of rank of both sexes and were placed as funerary robes on the graves of dead chiefs. The designs often defy interpretation, but this blanket belongs to the 'diving whale' class
