Rhynie chert. A large irregular block of grey stone polished smooth on one side. The face has numerous small round cavities each surrounded by a ring of darker stone, and irregular cave like cavities full of a cream coloured mineral.
Piece of Rhynie chert. Chert is a hard silica-rich rock. Rhynie chert, over 400-412 million years old) was first discovered by Dr William Mackie in 1912.
