Rebels with a Cause
For three centuries, the Jacobite Risings of 1715 and 1745 have captured the imagination of people across the world. They have left us with an enduring cultural legacy, visible in many of the popular images we have of Scotland today: images of the Highlands, of exile, lament and romance.
Featuring internationally significant material from the University of Aberdeen’s collections, this exhibition explores and challenges traditional assumptions about the Jacobites, whose fate often lay far beyond the Highlands, in the capitals of Europe, in the Americas and across the emerging British Empire.
The exhibition was shown at the Scottish Parliament in September 2010 and was the inaugural exhibition in the Sir Duncan Rice Library Gallery at the University of Aberdeen in November 2011.
