Description

3/4 portrait of Dr James Beattie, wearing doctorate gown, 'Essay on Truth' under left arm. Truth as an Angel holding balance plunging Scepticism, Sophistry, Infidelity (Voltaire, Hume, Gibbon) into darkness. Painted 1773 in London during Beattie's visit there to coincide with the publication of the 4th edition of 'The Nature of Truth' and the award of his LLd. Beattie awarded an LLd from Oxford 1773. The donors were the grandnieces of Beattie. Glazed (TRU-VUE 4.5mm Acrylic).
