Abstract
Born in Aberdeen in 1620, Robert Morison graduated from Marischal College in 1635 and became Professor of Botany at Oxford. The red flower he holds may allude to his career but is more likely to relate to his impending marriage. Probably originating in a Flemish wedding custom a red carnation, when held in the sitter's hand very often signifies that the painting commemorates his betrothal.
