Abstract
Horses provided almost the only motive power for land transport before the advent of mechanised transport. Riding was one way that the more prosperous could move about, ususally men rode, women would go by a coach or cart. This is a pair of spurs from the late 18th or 19th century. They are made from steel, the quality 'best hard' inscribed inside the heel. They have ox leather straps to fix them to the boot. Each has a long rounded spur with a small rowel. They were used to urge the horse on with the leg on a long journey, particularly with a horse that would not go forward. This type of rowelled spur would not be used now.
