<text>The old college buildings are depicted just as Marischal College and King's were at there lowest ebb. Buildings were decaying and both institutions were inefficiently run. The first commission to enquire into the state of the universities in Aberdeen which was eventually to lead to 'fusion' in 1860, was not appointed until 1826. Marischal College was completely rebuilt between 1836 and 1845. One of a series of views of Aberdeen produced by Smith and Swan in 1822. See also ABDUA: 30307, 30172, 31571. Joseph (or Joshua) Swan was a Glasgow-based engraver active c.1820-40. Salmon netting is depicted on the river.

Double portrait exhibited at Aberdeen Artists' Society in 1908 which may relate to this work. Aberdeen born Strachan (1875-1950) studied at RSA school in Edinburgh and travelled extensively in Europe and North Africa. He is now regarded principally as a designer of stained glass, numerous examples of which are in Aberdeen University buildings. He also worked, particularly early in his career, as a mural painter and portraitist.</text>
