They have an S- or Z-shaped profile, and are decorated with bands of fine incised geometric pattern. In NE Scotland the Northern beaker types are associated with the introduction of metal working and are often found in individual cist burials, both probably related to settlement of people from Europe. Later beakers were made locally, and often have archaic or idiosyncratic features. This beaker is a Late Northern type. It is of medium size and has a rounded belly and a short neck. The comb-impressed decoration is in four horizontal bands separated by plain areas, and is on the neck and body, where it is not quite horizontal. The decoration comprises chevrons, zig-zags, and ladder patterns confined between lines. The beaker was found at Mains of Leslie, Premnay, Aberdeenshire in a grave with a skeleton and some clay lumps and pebbles. Urns were the dominant type of pottery vessel used in burials, usually of a cremated body, during the early Bronze Age, about 1450-1250BC. They are found both in cemeteries and as secondary burials in barrows, often with the base uppermost, and may be accompanied by other grave goods. An urn is tall with a flat, often very narrow base, and may be decorated. There are two separate urn traditions, collared and cordoned urns. This is an incomplete cordoned urn, the base is missing, but the bevelled rim, the neck, defined by two cordons, and the decorated collar area are preserved. The cordon around the base of the collar is particularly emphasised. The cord-impressed decoration makes a pattern of interlocking striped triangles. The urn was found at Drumtochty, Fetteresso, Kincardineshire. The decoration is typical for a cordoned urn. The decoration is small cord-impressed marks, comprising two bands of lines, zig-zags, and dots on the belly and lower body, and verticals, zig-zags and diagonals on the upper neck. Plain zones separate the bands. The beaker was found at Catterline, Kinneff, Kincardineshire at the end of the 19th century. A schist pendant was found with it. The decoration is in narrow bands of impressed chevrons and cross-hatching on the foot, waist and neck, with a broad band of similar patterns on the belly. The bands are separated by plain, burnished zones. Some of the pattern is in-filled with clay lime, which may be part of an original colouring. The beaker was found at Johnston, Leslie, Aberdeenshire in a cist made of slate slabs and accompanied by two flint scrapers. dish Hasluck
