Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The Picts developed from the Iron Age population of northern Scotland during the first centuries AD, and were first mentioned in records in 297 AD and continued into the 9th century. Pictish carved stones appeared by the 5th or 6th century, the date of the earliest being disputed. Originally some may have been painted. This Class I symbol stone is probably the base of a larger, granite standing stone. It is engraved with a double disc and Z-rod. The design suggests a date of the 6th or 7th century AD. The stone was recovered lying face down from Dead Man's Howe, near Insch, Aberdeenshire, which is in the valley between the hill of Dunnideer, upon which is a fort of this period, and the Hill of Christ's Kirk, which is surmounted by the remains of a palisaded enclosure, probably also dating from the Iron Age.

This cross fragment and its base were found in a pile of stones near the Cairn o Mount. Other crosses are known from Deeside, while the pattern on the cross shaft is similar to some in the 9th century Book of Deer. The red sandstone from which they are carved comes from at least 2km away on the southern flanks of the Mounth. The line of hills that form the Mounth is one of the major barriers to movement in Scotland. The Cairn o Mount dominates the summit beside the Fettercairn to Banchory road as it has done for almost 4000 years. Marking both a routeway and a barrier, the cairn was later joined by this Christian cross.

Oil painting, 3/4 portrait, standing, facing. Short greying brown hair, walrus moustache, wears olive drab trenchcoat, white scarf, arms behind back holding papers. Plate reads 'Archibald Forbes LLD AFTER H Von HERKOMER', so possibly a copy. Herkomer ran a school in Bushey in Hertfordshire in 1890's. He was a very successful portraitist. The pose is in late 19th-century style. Archibald Forbes (1838-1900) was a war correspondent and a large collection of medals given to him were bequeathed to the University 1922.
