During the Iron Age horses and chariots were used widely in warfare. The evidence for this is the large number of decorative trappings that have been found, and one type is a rein ring or terret. This Donside terret is one of the massive type, particularly characteristic in NE Scotland during the first three centuries AD. It is made of cast bronze and is oval with a flat base. There are two holes cut in the ring, one circular and the other diamond-shaped, probably to take a decorative embellishment. The terret comes from the collection of Dr. J.
