Description

Sword, double-edged, basket-hilted, constructed of round bars with large 'S' and fleurs-de-lis in rear compartments. Thick junction plates with serrated edges. Carved upper ends of branches where they fit into grooves of pommel. Pommel of low conical form with four deep grooves bordered by incised lines, and four rings or dots punched in the bottoms of the grooves. Sharkskin covered grip which has spiral grooves for missing wire. Ferrules of iron with scalloped edges. Remains of wig. Old liner probably not original. Quillon, wrist or back-guard, has been added by riveting but is contemporary with use. On the underside is incised IA over S. The initials are for John Allan of Stirling.
